No better place to start the New Year 🙌 Secure your tickets here 👇https://t. co/J5cxleCWYy pic. twitter. com/agWKUS0SbK — Ulster Rugby (@UlsterRugby) December 27, 2022 Team news. Several big-name players have returned to Ulster’s starting line up, as Billy Burns, James Hume, Jacob Stockdale, Robert Baloucoune and Duane Vermeulen all feature. Iain Henderson will captain the side again from the second row, as his run of starts continues after missing much of the start of the season through injury.
What’s the team news? The eight Munster players selected for Ireland’s Nations Series fixtures miss out but Paul O'Connell's nephew, 18-year-old Evan, is destined for a debut from the bench. If he features, UL Bohs man and former Castletroy College student O’Connell will become the province’s youngest player of the professional era, beating the record Ruadhán Quinn set earlier this season. Mike Haley returns from a groin injury to make his first appearance since the win over Zebre at Musgrave Park four weeks ago. After a six-week rest period and being cleared by the independent medical consultant, Alex Kendellen starts on his first appearance since sustaining a concussion against Cardiff in URC round 1.
Andy Warwick is selected at loosehead prop with Marty Moore at tighthead and hooker Tom Stewart completing the front row. 22-year-old David McCann, and Sean Reffell will start alongside the experience of Springbok number eight, Duane Vermeulen, to complete the pack. Nathan Doak is named at scrum half, and partners Billy Burns.
Including O’Connell, four Greencore Munster Rugby Academy players are named in the squad with Patrick Campbell and Edwin Edogbo both starting, the latter back in after a calf injury. Cian Hurley is in line for his second Munster appearance. Eoin O’Connor makes his second start for Munster and his first appearance of the season. Malakai Fekitoa, Paddy Patterson and Dave Kilcoyne also come into the side while Jack Crowley moves to his more familiar position at out-half having started at full-back last week. Roman Salanoa (head) and Simon Zebo (calf) return to the matchday squad and are named among the replacements. Ulster captain, Alan O’Connor, will once again lead the side alongside Wallaby, Sam Carter, in a second row that remains unchanged from the 37-39 victory in Ellis Park a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Ulster missed out on the second game of their South African tour after their scheduled meeting with Sharks was postponed due to an outbreak of E. coli and Norovirus in camp. On the latest episode of The Left Wing, Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald are joined by Ruaidhri to look ahead to the Autumn internationals and discuss Leinster's win over Munster. Will kicks things off by asking Rud and Luke what a successful November would look like for Andy Farrell - are results the most important thing or should the Ireland head coach look to blood new players? The age-old question of how many games Johnny Sexton should play is up for discussion too, as is the pecking order at scrum-half. The chat then moves on to Leinster's win over Munster, with Luke bemused by the view that there were many positives for Graham Rowntree to take from the game and Rud wondering if Munster would benefit from a rebuilding season in the Challenge Cup.

While Ulster weren’t convincing against Connacht, as they almost let a commanding 14-point lead slip with just a few minutes remaining, the northern province did win and remain in third place in the table as a result. Despite the significant gap in the table in favour of Ulster, Munster are arguably coming into the game in better form, although they will be up against what promises to be a vociferous Belfast crowd.
